Jets Sign Scheifele To Entry-Level Contract – The Globe & Mail

Mark Scheifele says he’s relieved to have finally signed a contract with the Winnipeg Jets but he knows there’s no guarantee he will be with the team for the season.

“It was a pretty happy moment for me,” Scheifele said after signing an entry level contact that runs three years and is worth a reported $900,000 annually plus a $700,000 annual bonus. “It has given me the opportunity to show what I can do.”

The 18-year-old forward was Winnipeg’s first pick last summer and he has been a stand out for the team during the preseason. He’s had eight points, including four goals, easily topping any other Jet player.

But the club has to decide whether to keep for the season or send him back to his junior team in Barrie. If he plays more than nine games with the Jets his contract would kick in and he would be eligible for free agency after three years. If he returns to Barrie before game 10, his contract would not start until he returned to the Jets next year, pushing out his free agency a year, until he was 21.
